Live Giraffe Birth – hello baby !

We have had a number of giraffe born here at Kragga Kamma Game Park but we’ve seldom been lucky enough to witness the actual birth LIVE. More often than not we simply see a new tiny tot up alongside its mom.
Giraffe populations have plummeted in recent years across Africa  by 40%  in the past two decades. This is due to a number of factors including habitat loss, habitat degradation and habitat fragmentation coupled with human population growth and illegal hunting (poaching).
Giraffe breed very well, however they are at their most vulnerable during birth. The entire process lasted about two hours, easy pickings for predators…..
Approximately 75% of all young giraffes don’t survive to adulthood due to becoming the victim of predators. That makes it one of the highest mortality rates among animals out there.

Rangers out on a game drive called to say that one of our giraffe was about to give birth to a brand new baby giraffe….. Needless to say we dropped everything and RACED right over !
Dad cruises over to see how his girl is doing…..
Just like us humans, well – us FEMALE humans :)- Mom was having visible contractions with breaks in between…. each time we thought THIS WAS IT, but it took way longer than we thought……
Dad cruises over again, ”What’s taking so long woman ? ” PFFT ….Men !!
Here we go……..
WOW ! Incredible – and surprising to realise that the calf does not actually drop from the great height you’d think it does…. by the time it makes the drop it has already slid out quite a way, its head already almost touching the ground…..
One of the lucky groups who were on a guided game drive at the time cheered like mad as the calf was born – what a great sighting for our visitors….
Just keeping it’s head up took quite some doing…wobble wobble wobble plop
Mom giving nunu a good top to toe…..
” Up you get junior..”
Whoopsiedaisy !
50 minutes after being born, finally up on all four feet……
What a clever tyke….great success…..and then we left mom & tot to settle down….. What an absolute privilege <3

What a great set of photos. While in Kenya, a few years ago, we got on camels and was able to ride right amongst the herd of giraffes without any sort of spooking. It was so wonderful. They are such a magnificent animal who needs help so that our grandkids and great grandkids can enjoy them too! Thank you so much for sharing these. I shared them with my friends. They are awesome.
