How does a baby giraffe survive such a fall ?

We have had a number of giraffe births here at Kragga Kamma Game Park but I have to say, that it never ever gets old. It is quite remarkable that such a delicate new born creature can fall from such a great height, and live to tell the tale !
But they do, each and every time… and to see it first hand, and to see the love of that mother for her calf, and to see the herd mates and their gentle curiosity and warm welcome, is nothing short of incredible
… and THIS, is why I live here 🙂

” Are you okay little one…. just flick you ear then I know you’re alright…. and keep breathing…”
3
” I love you already…”

5
” Righto little one, I see all four legs are intact, lets get you up ! “

6
” Oh wait, let me just move this vine out of the way, it is sure to trip you up “

2
” Mooooom, enough – I’m totally clean now…. everywhere ! “

8
” goodness gracious me, first I fall from the heavens, and now I’m expected to get up on STILTS ! I’m not sure this world is for me hey… “

” Woah….thanks Mom, for being there to lean up on…it’s HIGH up here ! ”

” Hey hey – look at meeee, I’m UP – I think I’ve got this, watch out world – here I come ! “

” I know it’s up here somewhere….. “

” Hello…. are you my friend ? ”

There is not much more that gladdens the heart than to see the gentle, warm, eager greetings that a herd of giraffe show a newborn baby…. THIS, is why I live here !

This is so very cool! I visited Kenya in 2006, spent 3 weeks, and didn’t want to come home. I am a painter and it was sensory overload, seeing all the animals Africa has to offer. I am so happy to be a part of this group.
