A ‘David and Goliath’ kind of moment

Happily watching one of our rhino cows with her 3 month old calf, making their way towards a nearby waterhole…mom grazing and junior playfully gamboling ahead…. I suddenly noticed a well camouflaged Thickknee ( Dikkop) bird in their path and more than likely sitting on her eggs in the nest on the ground – uh oh…. this may not end well !
Up she popped, shrieking her little lungs out, wings wide in alarm…trying gallantly to protect her nest from the approaching behemoth …one footfall would spell the end of her brood…
How brave is this fragile Thickknee ? !! There was absolutely no way she was going to allow a creature even 1000 times bigger than her to pass ….incredible to witness.
All that frantic shrieking attracted the attention of three month old Bonnie….
But she too was not going to risk a face full of feathers and angry beak from this very protective mom ๐Ÿ™‚
Whew, that was close…well done mum !
And back to the nest as though she had not just successfully fended off her worst nightmare . Such a magic sighting – respect Mrs Thickknee, happy hatch day ๐Ÿ™‚

Photo’s taken at our family owned game park, Kragga Kamma Game Parkย just outside Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
We keep our family herd of rhino DEHORNED, regulary trimming their horns to keep them as short as they can be and as unattractive as possible to poachers.
You can help us keep our rhino safe by visiting our park. In this way, your hard earned monies by way of entry fee/accommodation/ game drives etc goes directly towards helping us keep our rhino from harm.
We look forward to your visit, please let us know that you follow our rhino family on social media so that we can make a special effort to personally welcome you to our little safe haven.

This really shows how far a mother will go to protect her young. Good for you for being there at the right time to be able to share it with the rest of us. Very cool!
